165 Mather St.

Traditionally thought to be a glacial kettle,  this property at the corner of Mather and Servoss currently needs our attention.  The goal of the Hamden Land Conservation Trust is to protect and preserve this open space in its natural state. The Land Trust has seen to the preservation of this small property since 1979 and in recent years the property has seen encroachment by illegal dumping and general uninformed use of the property.

We are pleased to be forming a partnership with the Whitneyville Gardening Club. Our goal is to see the property properly identified and highlighted. This piece of open space is and always will be a part of our Whitneyville and Hamden heritage, open to the public.
Join The Hamden Land Conservation Trust and the Whitneyville Gardening Club as we work to raise funds to improve and manage this property.

Proposed improvements are contained within the sketch at the left.  These improvements include:

  • Removal of existing old and damaged wire fencing along Mather St. and replacing it with a split rail fence.
  • Installation of the same fencing along Servoss St. and abutting the current sidewalk, with entry at the current woodland path.
  • Mixed border planting along Mather St. fence using native plants.
  • Removal of weed trees along Mather St. between new fencing and the "kettle".
  • Signage that designates the property as belonging to the Land Trust, and interpretive/ educational signage within the property.

Please consider making a donation to help with this important project.
