Johnson's Pond
This 3.02 acre property in Spring Glen is bordered on three sides by residential properties on Thornton, Greenway, and Ingram Streets and on the fourth side by Regional Water Authority watershed land along the Mill River. Covered in summer with buttonbush and duckweed, it freezes readily in the winter, making an inviting spot for ice-skating. The woods and pond support a wide variety of plants and wildlife year-round. More than 120 species of birds have been observed here, as well as turtles, peepers, and snakes. This site is open for limited passive recreational use, such as walking and bird-watching, and ice-skating in winter. It is easily accessible from Whitney Avenue on the east and Dixwell Avenue on the west. |

Timberwood Trail
This is a narrow trail corridor about 20’ wide x 440’ long, leading to a view of Wolcott Falls, situated just off Shepard Avenue. Acquired by the land trust in 1988, this trail affords a leisurely stroll down a cleared path to a lovely small waterfall. It is available for public access and makes a nice outing on a warm summer day. The waterfall is created by an outcropping of balsalt that has not worn away over time. The softer New Haven Arkose, a sandstone and feldspar mixture, has been worn down by the creek. Wolcott Falls is owned by the Town of Hamden, and the Hamden Land Conservation Trust has jurisdiction over the trail leading to the falls. |
